The Phonics Screen Check is coming up.

For our kids, it's the first formal assessment they'll face, and this can bring up a few worries...

😮‍💨 Some kids find reading tricky, and worry about getting the words wrong…

💭 Some kids struggle to remember all the sounds, particularly with longer words…

😓 Some kids might simply be anxious about the change in scenery…

In my experience, this brings up a few concerns for parents...

  • What if my child is nervous or stressed? You want to help them feel confident and be in a good place to show off what they know.

  • What does the test look like? You want to know what to help your child prepare for and how you can build their confidence so they don't find anything about the test worrying or intimidating.

  • My child finds reading hard, what does it mean for them? Will they be held back?

  • There's little information or support available at school, so you're not sure where to turn for help.

The struggle to support your child can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Supporting your child at home can be easy.

Children learn best in small doses, small amounts of time, a few times a day. You, as their parent, are perfectly placed to give your child the best possible help, with quick, fun activities that you can do while they're brushing their hair or walking to school.

You can help them practise, help them prepare, and ensure they're making progress, day by day, week by week.

All you need are the resources and the games to play!

Hey there!

I'm Jen, a Phonics and Early Literacy Specialist and Primary School Teacher, and I am beyond thrilled to share with you the Phonics Screen Club.

I've always believed that the most important thing I do as a teacher is teach kids to read. Reading is the key that unlocks a world of knowledge, imagination, and endless possibilities. It enables children not just to exist within the world, but to become active members of it.

My vision is simple:

To give parents like you the tools and knowledge you need to teach your children to read.

I know that by equipping you with the right strategies and resources, we can create a generation of confident readers who will thrive academically and beyond.

Every child deserves the chance to be a confident reader, to explore new worlds through books, and to learn and grow through reading.

This is the same whether your child is just learning their first letters, or is confidently moving on to chapter books. Either way, I'm here to help!

Frequently Asked Questions...

What exactly is the Phonics Screening Club and how does it work?

The Phonics Screening Club is an online portal where you can access a huge range of video lessons as well as activities, tools and resources each week. As soon as you join, you'll be given access to the Phonics Check Champions. Inside are 8 weeks of sessions, (all instantly accessible so you can look over all the activities and work at your child's level) with activities and games for every level of reading, as well as additional resources to help your child become accustomed to the structure of the Check and gain confidence when doing it.

You also get access to my private facebook group to help you if you ever get stuck, or need some guidance on how to support your child, so you can help them over that reading roadblock quickly and get them back on track.

How will the club help me support my child's reading journey?

The Phonics Screening Club is designed to help you assess your child's reading, identify any areas they need to work on and guide you through supporting them at home. Each week has specific activities based around the core skill we're working on, as well as additional resources and games to ensure your child finds every step fun.

What resources and tools are included in the Club?

A live masterclass on Zoom - to walk you through what the Phonics Screening Check actually is, what your child will be expected to do and exactly how you can help to prepare them for their first formal assessment so they're ready and excited to show how much they know. This live session will be run twice, on the 14th of April at 8pm and the 22nd of April at 12pm, as well as being recorded and sent out via email, so you can watch it whenever suits you.

The Phonics Check Champions - where you can access all the games and resources as well as videos explaining every step of the phonics screen check and how you can support your child with each level, leaving you confident that you can start supporting your child as soon as you join.

Involved assessment support - to track your child's progress, see how far they've come and ensure you know exactly what their next step is. Not only is there a phonics tracker, to track what sounds your child knows, and which ones they're still learning, but also a huge range of Phonics Screen Checks (both real past papers, and mini, level-specific ones I've created) to help your child ease into the structure of the Check, and for you to keep track of how they're doing each week.

I'm not sure I can do this myself. Should I just hire a tutor?

I completely understand why you might think this. Phonics is so far from how many of us learned to read and helping your child at home can seem really intimidating. It may feel like you need to be 'a teacher' or that you may get it wrong if you don't know what you're doing.

I've worked with so many parents who've had exactly the same worries and concerns, and every single one of them has absolutely nailed teaching their kids at home, with their kids being the ones who benefit most.

Kids retain so much more when they learn in small bursts. Being able to reinforce what your child learns for a couple of minutes a few times a day (when you're walking to and from school, just before dinner, when they're brushing their hair etc.) will lead to them making so much more progress than they would with a 1 hour a week session with a tutor.

With the Phonics Screening Club, you're saving not only hundreds of pounds compared to a tutor, you're also offering your child the best possible support - the support that only you can give (and support that will benefit them far into the future, not just while they have a tutor!)

What kind of support will I receive as a member of the club?

As soon as you join, you'll gain access to the Raising Readers Facebook group. In there, you can celebrate any wins or ask any questions you may have and myself and other members of the community will be there to celebrate with you or support you when needs be!

Also, if at any time, you need more support, my inbox is always open!

Is the Phonics Screening Club suitable for children with learning difficulties or special needs?

The content within the Phonics Screening Club is designed to take you through the stages of reading, from reading CVC words, up to and including reading multisyllabic words. This means that no matter the stage of reading your child is at, there will be activities to suit them and support them to the next step.

Having said that, if your child has struggled with reading in the past, it's unlikely they'll make the leap from reading their first words to multisyllabic words in just 8 weeks. Reading is very hard and it takes time to master. Instead of this Booster, I would recommend checking out the Raising Readers Community, which focuses on going at your child's pace, from their very first sounds to becoming a free reader. It's more of a long-term solution than an 8 week booster.

I have worked with several children with additional needs in my time as a teacher (and I've worked as a Dyslexia specialist tutor and am Dyslexic myself), so if you have any questions or require more support, I'm here to help! You can message me at [email protected]

Can I access the content at my own pace, or is there a specific schedule I need to follow?

The Phonics Screening Club is designed to be done over 8 weeks, so that we can offer a boost to our kids' reading before the check (which will be done the week beginning June 9th). However, the content will remain in the portal forever (except where I edit it to make it better), so there's absolutely no pressure on you or your child to complete it to any schedule. If you want to take more time or you want to go back over any areas, you are completely welcome to!

Are there any additional costs or hidden fees associated with the membership?

No. This club is a one-time fee that gives you access to absolutely everything within the portal. There are no additional or hidden fees.

Is there a trial period or money-back guarantee?

Due to the online nature of this Club and the content, I cannot offer a refund after you have started. However, if you are dissatisfied in any way or have a change in circumstances, get in touch and I'll do my best to support you.
