Building Comprehension skills (understanding what you read) can be very tricky. It relies on us being able to make up age/stage appropriate questions for our kids and guiding them through the answers.
While this is certainly doable, it's also not easy.
In fact, I often get asked by parents in the Raising Readers Community if I recommend anything to help, particularly for Year 1 and 2 kids.
While I don't usually recommend workbooks as, in most cases, kids learn best through short and sweet sessions (preferably games), when it comes to comprehension, things are a little different. You need loads of different, short, texts for your child to read and it can be tricky to come up with specific comprehension questions to challenge them.
The only workbooks I recommend are the CGP Comprehension books (specifically for our Year 1/2 kids - Kids in Reception are usually too young to focus on these and make significantly larger progress by learning through play.)
They offer loads of bits and pieces that scale perfectly to challenge your little one, with each one taking between 5-10 minutes to complete (in my experience - if your child takes longer, I'd pause and either leave it there, or come back to it later).
I'd recommend doing maybe 1/week so your child doesn't feel overwhelmed.
I've linked a few of the books below, in case you want to grab them:
Short, easy pieces of text with simple questions to ease your child in to answering questions about what they've read.
Slightly harder reading, but still with simple questions to build your child's confidence.
While the reading for these are still relatively simple, the questions start to become more challenging, asking your child to work out the answers from context.
After a quick recap to get our kids back in the swing of things after the Summer, this book focuses on introducing vocabulary definitions and scanning the text to find answers to the questions.
Building further, this book asks our kids to start developing their own opinions based on the text and give more specific answers. The text also starts to get longer, helping our kids build stamina.
And with the stretch book, the text gets longer, more complicated and more diverse, alongside the questions becoming more challenging to make sure our kids are
confident before they head in to Year 3!
(These ones look a little cleaner because they're the ones I've just bought for my Year 2 girls!)
They are affiliate links, which means if you buy them through that link, I get a very small amount of money, with no extra cost to you.
I never recommend a product that I don't personally use, and CGP books are something I've consistently used with the kids I support. At the moment, I've just put in an order for my Year 2, 3 and 4 kids!
Equally, while the comprehension books are fantastic (I use them every year), there are others I wouldn't bother with. If you come across any books and want to know my opinion, pop me a message on Instagram or Facebook. Just click the icon below!
