A few signs that your child is reluctant are:
😮💨 Being slow to join you when they know you're going to read.
😢 Seeming unhappy or demotivated, slumped in their seat or not wanting to start.
🙂↔️ Constantly looking away or at other things on the wall, or just generally fidgeting and getting distracted.
🫣 Staring blankly at the page, not trying to sound the word out or make a guess, or, if they are reading, they're stopping on every word to check it with you, looking up at you rather than trying to keep the 'flow' of reading.
🙂↔️ Clowning around or misbehaving, trying everything to distract from the reading itself.
🥺 Becoming easily frustrated when they don't know a word straight away, either getting that 'whine' in their voice, saying 'I don't know' or becoming really upset.
How many have you ticked off?
If your child is doing any of these when it's time to read, or you want to make sure you're prepared just in case, this workshop is for you.
When you join the Engaging Reluctant Readers Workshop...
🏆 How to raise the value of reading at home, so your child understands why it’s so important to read, how reading has an effect on our everyday lives and how reading can open doors they didn't even know were there. This will help them stay resilient when they find reading hard, and keep them engaged, even when they'd rather be doing something else!
🙋♀️ Ways to make reading interactive and keep your child engaged throughout, helping you to stop the reluctance before it even has a chance to start and building excitement for every reading session you do. Following these steps will help your child look forward to reading, and be excited to explore a new book with you.
💃 Quick and easy activities you can do when your child starts to get fidgety while they're reading. These 30 second brain breaks give your child a chance to rest and refocus, while still building important reading skills - all on handy flashcards that your child can choose from, giving them ownership over their reading.
💪 Comprehension questions to raise their engagement and develop critical thinking skills, as well as activities to build their vocabulary and awareness of repeated words. Using these strategies will not only keep your child focused on the book and what they're learning, but also deepen their learning, making reading easier for them each and every time they sit down.
📚 A Reading Activities Tracker so your child can see just how much they’ve achieved in their reading and can feel proud of their hard work.

I'm Jen, a Phonics and Early Literacy Specialist and Primary School Teacher, and I am so excited to share the Reading Words workshop with you.
I've always believed that the most important thing I do as a teacher is teach kids to read. Reading is the key that unlocks a world of knowledge, imagination, and endless possibilities. It enables children not just to exist within the world, but to become active members of it.
To give parents like you the tools and knowledge you need to teach your children to read.
I know that by equipping you with the right strategies and resources, we can create a generation of readers who will thrive, not just academically but in the real world too.
Every child deserves the chance to be a confident, independent reader, to explore new worlds through books, and to learn and grow through reading.
This is the same whether your child is just learning their first letters, or is confidently moving on to chapter books. Either way, I'm here to help!
That's why I've put together the Reading Words Workshop, to help you help your kids make that leap from learning letters to reading actual words - and from there, the possibilities are endless!
Your child is dragging their feet when it's time to read or doing everything they can to slow the process down - you want them to enjoy reading and be excited to show what they can do.
Your child is worried about getting it wrong and checking every word with you - you want them to be confident in their ability and become more fluent in their reading.
You want your child to be excited to read with you and are willing to try a few different things to make that happen.
You want reading to be something that you and your little one can enjoy together and not a daily struggle.
Your child is already a fluent reader and past the point of reading with you.
You don't have the time to read their phonics book with them and would rather outsource to someone else - this is completely valid, but this workshop won't work for you!
You want a one-and-done solution rather than a few different strategies to try. Each child is different and so will respond best to different strategies!
You know your child is struggling with the functions of reading and want to focus on helping them learn reading skills. The Raising Readers Community may be a better fit! (This workshop is included in the RRC for free.)
First off, I completely get it! There are never enough hours in the day to do everything you need to, especially with a little one by your side.
That's why I've designed this workshop to be done in bite-sized chunks, whenever works for you. The longest single video session is 15 minutes long, and even that has sections so you can pause and restart it when you need to.
Every single activity within this workshop is designed to be easy to fit into the time you're already taking to read with your child, rather than something you need to 'make time' for.
In fact, this workshop will likely give you more time, as your little one won't be dragging their feet and it won't feel like a battle to get them to read a single page!
A series of instantly accessible, bite sized videos - to walk you through exactly how to support your child when they're reluctant to read, as well as a few things that will help build their motivation to read outside of their book too.
Games and resources - for all stages of this workshop. All games and activities are quick to do, with flashcards so your child can choose one themselves. You also get printable resources and questions to support your child's learning further, meaning they understand what they're reading more deeply and are therefore able to engage more fully with their book.
Access to my private Client-only Facebook Group - to help you if you ever get stuck, or need some guidance on how to support your child, so you can help them over that reading roadblock quickly and get them back on track.
As soon as you join, you'll gain access to the Raising Readers Facebook group. In there, you can celebrate any wins or ask any questions you may have and myself and other members of the community will be there to celebrate with you or support you when needs be!
Also, if at any time, you need more support, my inbox is always open!
The activities and resources within the Engaging Reluctant Readers Workshop are designed to be used again and again, no matter your child's age, so you always have something to fall back on when reading feels like a struggle.
There's absolutely no pace or schedule to follow, except for your child's. This workshop aims to provide you with resources to suit you and help make reading with your child more fun for both of you.
No. This workshop is a one-time fee that gives you access to everything within the Engaging Reluctant Readers workshop. There are no additional or hidden fees.
